Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder health forecasting project
The weather can have a huge effect on the health of those with breathing difficulties caused by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder.
The problem is particularly noticeable in Wales where, along with ex-smokers, people who grew up in coal mining and heavy industry districts are now suffering from breathing difficulties. By linking GP surgeries with the met office, COPD sufferers receive timely advice and medication when the weather is worsening.
The result has been better health and fewer hospital admissions.
What kind of organisations run this project?
This project isn't completely unique - it's based on a similar pilot in Cornwall. This work is suitable for any group of GP practices in areas where COPD is high.
