Getting it together

The heart of the course is peer-to-peer training with young people passing on health messaging to others.

A significant number of young people have mental health difficulties - or struggle with drugs, self image, worklessness or the effects of peer pressure.  The Health Promotion department in Derry realised that young people are much more likely to take good advice from others of their own age than from older people.  They devised the 'Getting it Together' course in partnership with teenagers in response to this.   The course is delivered by young trainers with a youth worker in the background.

The organisers say its been their most successful project in years - reaching groups like young fathers who are less likely to access support.

Who runs this kind of project?

It's a partnership between the Derry health service and a variety of groups providing services and support to young people.
