Hoxton Health
Older people in Hackney have clubbed together to provide a service offering affordable complementary therapies and exercise with the support of their local PCT.
Complementary therapies are unaffordable for many older people who would like to access them in Hackney. Those with a background in very physical jobs are experiencing degeneration of joints, others simply want the uplift of touch therapies to help in dealing with declining health or bereavement.
Hoxton Health has been providing low cost therapies for twenty years. Their PCT provides a room for their activities and is particularly supportive of the exercise classes which they also provide.
What kinds of organisation get involved in this project?
This is a grassroots movement, which has gained respect over many years of operation. It is expanding slightly with services going to less central GP practices in Hackney.
