The Haven
The Haven is a charity attached to a GP surgery on the outskirts of Glasgow. It offers free information, complementary therapies and emotional support to people affected by life limiting illness such as cancer, MS and motor neurone disease. They also support family members and carers.
Though services like this for cancer are relatively common, the fact that the Haven helps with other serious illnesses such as MS where there is rarely such support is a part of the uniqueness.
The service has also expanded to create adapted fitness programmes for those whose illness is stable - and conversely to provide
What makes the Haven a success?
Director Janice Williams says 'it's the synergy created by the Haven model of care that makes it work so well - nurses, therapists and volunteers all supporting each other. The line between patient and volunteer is often a fluid one.'
