Self care is not only about over the counter medicines
The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health has no hesitation in joining the BMA, Royal College of General Practitioners and the NHS Alliance to support the campaign for better self-care.
But it is not enough to advise those with minor ailments to buy over the counter medicines instead of seeing their GP.
For instance, the Alexander Technique has been shown to be more effective in treating back pain than either medication or traditional physiotherapy.
Some people find herbal remedies such as pelargonium good for treating colds.
A simple cold compress – a pack of peas from the freezer wrapped in a towel – will help minor strains.
Some complementary therapies, such as massage, yoga and reflexology, can reduce stress, a factor in many illnesses.
While we all know that diet and exercise can help prevent us getting ill in the first place, it is less well understood that they can play a role in helping us get better when we do develop minor ailments.
Dr Michael Dixon, the Foundation’s medical director, said:
'Self care works when patients are empowered to make their own decisions. And we know that empowered patients are healthier, happier and have a better quality of life even for those with long term disease.
So everyone benefits. The patient, who gets better. The doctor who has more time to see patients with serious conditions that need medical treatment. And the NHS, which saves money.
